MANUKA HONING & ACTIVE UMF® MANUKA HONING

Honing kent reeds een lange geschiedenis van medicinale en geneeskrachtige toepassingen. Onderzoek aan de Waikato Universiteit in Hamilton te Nieuw Zeeland door Dr. Peter Molan en zijn team, hebben aangetoond dat bijna alle honing wel geneeskrachtige werkingen hebben maar dat een speciale soort genaamd Manuka Honing, afkomstig

van de Manuka Struik (Leptpospermum scoparium), speciale ingrediënten bevat die niet in andere soorten honing voorkomt.

Dit onderzoek leidde tot de unieke UMF® (Unique Manuka Factor) aanduiding vanwege de speciale ingrediënten. Alle honingsoorten bevatten waterstof peroxide dat zorgt voor een milde anti-bacteriële werking, UMF® honingsoorten hebben een veel hogere anti-bacteriële werking dat niet in verband staat met waterstof peroxide maar met de Unique Manuka Factor. De aanduiding zoals "10+" bevestigen de anti-bacteriële werking dat vergeleken kan worden met een 10% oplossing van Phenol, een standaard anti-bacterieel. Het gebruik van UMF® is gecontroleerd en bevestigd dat de honing getest is op de level van effectiviteit. Active UMF® Manuka Honing van Manuka Health is niet getest op dieren en bevat geen genetische gemanipuleerde stoffen.

UITLEG (engels)
The strength, or UMF® number, has been compared with the antiseptic and disinfectant strength of carbolic acid (phenol). The UMF® can range from 10 to 25+ which means that it is has an equivalent antibacterial strength of a 10% to 25% solution of carbolic acid. The higher the number the more powerful its antibacterial activity.

There are various factors responsible for the antibacterial action of honey. The first is honeys osmotic effect. Honey is a super-saturated solution of sugars with a water content of only 15 – 21% by weight. The strong interaction of these sugar molecules with water molecules leaves very few of the water molecules available for microorganisms, completely inhibiting the growth of many species of bacteria.

Honey, is also acidic, its pH being between 3.2 and 4.5 which inhibits the growth of many pathogens. The major antibacterial activity in most honeys is due to hydrogen peroxide, which is produced enzymatically in the honey. In addition, there may be antibacterial components that come from the nectar of various flowers. In most cases the antibacterial activity from the nectar is comparatively small, but in the case of Manuka honey it can be a very high level.

Recently there has been increased Scientific interest in the properties of active Manuka honey, the antibacterial activity of which is not only attributable to the hydrogen peroxide content, as found in other honeys, but also due to plant derived components from the Manuka plant itself. It is this unique unidentified activity which has been found effective against many antibiotic resistant bacteria. It is resistant to heat and unlike the usual hydrogen peroxide, antimicrobial activity in honey is not destroyed by the antioxidant enzyme catalyse which is present in body fluids.

A natural antibacterial honey, which nourishes as well as promoting tissue re-growth. Its antibacterial properties inhibit a broad spectrum of bacteria and fungi. Can be applied to cuts, burns, wounds, acne, abscesses, eczema (especially atopic eczema), cracked skin and eye infections. Can also be used to treat MRSA, varicose and skin ulcers, upset stomachs, diarrhoea, sore throats and colds. Used as a wound dressing it promotes an accelerated and efficient healing process with reduced infection, inflammation, scarring and pain.

DIRECTIONS:
Internally – Diarrhoea, stomach upsets etc. For general maintenance take 3 tbs. per day, preferably 1 hour before meals. For those taking it internally for medical purposes, eat 25g of Manuka honey (approximately one tablespoon) spread on a slice of bread, three times daily one hour before a meal and again before bedtime. For soothing sore throats, eat one teaspoon slowly three times a day between meals. For duodenal and stomach ulcer relief take a generous spreading (about one tablespoon) on a slice of bread one hour before meals with no fluids and again at bed time.

Externally –Cuts, Burns, Wounds, Abscesses, Eczema, Cracked skin, and Eye infections. Make sure that the area is clean. Apply the honey to the affected area (about 1 tablespoon to a 5cm wound) and cover well. The dressing needs to be changed at least once a day. The honey does not stick to the wound tissue, preventing tearing of newly formed tissue in the wound site when dressings are changed. The honey residue can easily be rinsed from the wound with water.

* When Active Manuka is taken on an empty stomach it is more effective at dealing with Helicobacter pylori. Other foods and liquids can dilute the effect of the honey. When take on a slice of toast, the slow breakdown of the components of the bread ensures that the Manuka has a prolonged action on the H-pylori, thus making it more effective. Taking the honey with Slippery Elm will also allow a delayed delivery time. (This information is based on results of clinical trials studying the action of Manuka on ulcers).

CAUTIONS:
Consult doctor before taking if suffering from diabetes. If using on wounds the natural acidity and osmotic action of the honey may produce a drawing sensation of tingling. This is generally more noticeable when used on leg ulcers, as there is impaired blood circulation. In a few cases there may be pain upon application to the wound, which can last up to 15 minutes. This should lessen over three days. For those who have a low pain thresh hold, gamma-irradiated or neutralised honey is recommended (currently only available in dressings in New Zealand).

INTERACTIONS:
Diabetics should use discretion when taking the honey orally. Discontinue usage if you notice adverse reaction. Do not cease regular medication without doctor’s consent.

MISC:
• Store below 30ºC. Shelf life of @ 4 - 5 years.
• The Manuka shrub, an early stage regeneration bush plant, grows abundantly throughout New Zealand. Commonly referred to as ‘Tee Tree’.
• Honeys differ widely in chemical analysis depending on the type of plant or tree from where the nectar is collected, and the soil and locality in which the plant is growing. The natural variance is also seen in Manuka honey. Active Manuka honey has been found at specific sites on the upper East Coast and northern parts of the North Island where it is collected.
• The UMF® standard is to distinguish between ordinary Manuka honey and the unique Active Manuka Honey. Ordinary honey has only the hydrogen peroxide antibacterial property which is common to most honeys; active Manuka honey has both the hydrogen peroxide antibacterial property and its own natural antibacterial property which gives it unique therapeutic uses.
• Taking the honey on bread internally is to ensure that the honey stays in the stomach for a longer period of time. While not all diarrhoea is caused by bacteria, the honey has a re-hydrating property making it an appropriate treatment for all types of diarrhoea.
• Not only is the active Manuka honey antibacterial, but also it nourishes and promotes tissue re-growth. The osmotic effect draws a thin film of moisture without damaging re-growing tissue. The healing is more rapid and there is minimal scarring.
• Researchers have found that the antibacterial property will penetrate the pores of unbroken skin to deal with problems below the skin surface. The peroxide antibacterial property will not penetrate the pores of the skin. This makes it very effective in the treatment of boils etc.
• Research has shown that UMF® Active Manuka Honey also promotes the re-hydration of the body causing the earlier clearing of diarrhoea, vomiting and stomach upsets.
• Internally it also stimulates the immune system helping the body deal with infections. It inhibits Helicobacter pylori and is effective in relieving stomach ulcers.
• The antibacterial properties of UMF® Active Manuka Honey are effective in the labs against MRSA (methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus), strains of bacteria that are notoriously resistant to antibiotics and are currently under investigation on MRSA cases.
• It creates a protective barrier to prevent cross infection of wounds.
• It has an anti-inflammatory action resulting in reduced water retention (oedema) and improved blood flow along with a reduction in pain.
• It prevents scarring leading to good cosmetic results.
